We mustered up our usual team for Brixhams popular BrixFest Dragon Boat Race with a few newcomers this year to add to the mix. Special thanks goes to Dickie for sponsoring the T-shirts, followed by Falfish for the caps, St Austell Brewery for our Beer and Caterfood for our Crisps. Our team name this year was Dickie’s Angels….We made our best time of 67 seconds on the first race, 70 seconds on the second, and 72 on the third. Many thanks to the team for all their efforts, including Vicky and Dee the two Quayside Hotel cheerleaders J. We came 7th out of 10. Here’s to next year’s race! And even though the sun wasn’t shining I still caught the sun…as you know it bounces off the water….
The day, although heavy with a sea mist, had some extra entertainment. A car had reversed down the slipway to launch a speedboat and off they went, leaving the car and trailer in situ. So the tide came in…..see picture….resulting in a truck towing said car out of the water minus the speedboat. Hmmm…. Then there was a pause whilst the inshore lifeboat was launched and shortly later, one of the dragon boats capsized at the start of the race ….see pic…. nice one!! Just glad it wasn’t us.
Despite the mist, all competitors and spectators enjoyed the day, which was rounded off by the fireworks in the evening.
BrixFest is still going on until Tuesday, then on the 16th June we have the infamous Brixham Trawler Race. A fun day for all.
Until the next blog…….see you at the Quayside Hotel soon. Geoffers signing out….
Ahoy there me hearties!! Well what a fantastic weekend we have all had!! The weather as you all know was fabulous and we must have had a record turnout for the pirates, as they were everywhere. You could hear the frivolity all day long once the cannons had stopped firing or the musketeers had a pause for a tot of rum in their firing efforts!
We were also privileged to have a visit from the Spanish Galleon which is a first I believe and was a very popular attraction – see picture.
Even if you were visiting beautiful Brixham just for the Bank Holiday, you could have sat all day pirate watching the pirates pass by enjoying themselves. Food, drink, and entertainment was on hand throughout. Many of our guests have already booked for next year. So get in there quickly! Here’s to next years Pirate festival in Brixham!!
Signing off for now…..Pirate Geoff
All the scaffolding has come down, the painting has finished, and most of our new signs advertising both the Quayside Hotel and Restaurant…..and The Ernie Lister Bar are now up. They’re brighter and more visible and we love them!! See pictures below.

Well the painting is all coming along fine…..old rotten woodwork has all gone and now we have lovely new wooden surrounds around our Quayside Restaurant windows. Remember also that we have a new menu now along with some favourites from the Brixham Fishmarket.
It’s lovely and sunny in Brixham harbour and our new paintwork gleams in the blazing sun. Some of the scaffolding is coming down tomorrow so half of the Quayside Hotel will be fully visible again, along with new Hotel and Restaurant signs. Next up is the Ernie Lister Bar, but remember the pub is still open…..serving real ales, homemade pub food, with a friendly atmosphere now run by Megan and our regular quiz and entertainment slots.
Until next time…..
It’s the world famous Brixham Pirate Festival this weekend in Brixham so we are ahead of the game. We’ve put up scaffolding and extra poles to act as gallows for all those naughty pirates….. ohhh arrr me earties!!
What am I thinking…….it is the start of our repainting of the outside of the hotel, along with new signage so watch this space….:)
And exciting new developments in the Ernie Lister Bar. Dave, after 8 years as Bar Manager has moved on to the Rugby Club and we wish him all the best there and thanks for his efforts over the years. We are pleased to welcome Megan as the New Bar Manager and new employee Tina who will be assisting her. All the other lovely staff, being Catherine, Annette, and Guy are still behind the bar I’m pleased to say 🙂
Next festival here in Brixham is Brixfest which is 27 to 29 May and we have a few rooms left. Fireworks on the Saturday night and all sorts of lovely things see website www.brixfest.com
Until next time
Exciting times at the Quayside Hotel in Brixham this year!!!
After last year’s refurbishment in the lounge and new chairs in the Hotel Restaurant along with several bedrooms, this year we have just changed our balconies to glass ones which look fabulous (picture enclosed) so you can see more of the harbour from your balcony chair – and bed if you are feeling lazy….. and later this month we start on the front of the Hotel. We are repainting the front in approximately the same colour and having fabulous new signs – can’t wait!!
We have also just changed both our 1 AA Rosette Restaurant Menu (pictures of scallops, duck, lemon tart) and also our Ernie Lister Bar menu (starter fishcake, steak fajitas, seafood platter) which has some tasty new dishes, along with our favourite fish dishes, all of them yummy!! To complement our lovely food we have new wine lists with some mouth watering wines 🙂
Signing off for now…..your friendly Manager Geoff…..further news coming soon!!
Enjoy some of the pictures taken over the Brixham Pirate weekend. A good time was had by all!
